PNG to ICO

Make a favicon from a PNG image

PNG is a practical format for logos and symbols because it supports lossless image data and an alpha channel for transparent pixels.

Upload your PNG in the console above, select the dimensions you need and generate the ICO files. Favicoo resizes the image in your browser, keeps its aspect ratio and places non-square artwork inside a square canvas rather than stretching it. The resulting files are available individually, and the ZIP option collects all selected sizes for convenient saving.

Conversion does not remove a background that is already part of the PNG. If the design was exported against a white canvas, those white pixels stay white. For a transparent favicon, start with a PNG that actually contains transparent areas.

A better source image

PNG favicon tips for a sharper icon

Keep alpha transparency

Export a logo or symbol with a transparent background when it should sit cleanly against light or dark browser UI. Preview both contexts if the mark contains white or very pale details.

Use a square canvas

A square source makes spacing easier to control. For a portrait or landscape PNG, Favicoo fits the complete image into the square output so it will not be distorted or unexpectedly cropped.

Design for 16 pixels

Thin strokes, tiny words and small gaps can disappear in browser tabs. Prefer one bold symbol, a simple monogram or a simplified logo mark over the full wordmark.

Workflow

PNG to favicon in three steps

1

Choose the PNG

Drop the image, browse your device or paste an image while the upload step is open. You can convert one PNG at a time.

2

Pick icon dimensions

Start with 16 × 16, 32 × 32, 48 × 48 and a larger size such as 64 × 64. Requirements vary by use case; Google recommends a favicon larger than 48 × 48 for good display across its search surfaces.

3

Inspect and download

Review each square preview, download only the sizes you want or save the full set in a ZIP archive. Each chosen size is a separate ICO file.

PNG to favicon FAQ

Questions about converting PNG to favicon ICO

Will the converter keep PNG transparency?

Yes. Transparent pixels are retained when they exist in the source PNG. If the image has already been flattened onto a solid background, conversion cannot know which parts you intended to remove.

Can I download multiple favicon sizes?

Yes. Yes. Choose several dimensions for the same PNG. Favicoo creates one ICO file per selected size, which you can download individually or together in a ZIP archive.

Is PNG better than JPG for a logo favicon?

PNG is often more suitable for logos because it supports transparency and lossless edges. JPG is fine for opaque photographs, but it cannot store transparent pixels.

How do I add the new icon to my website?

Upload the chosen ICO to your website, commonly as /favicon.ico, and reference it in the page head. See the favicon installation guide for the HTML example and checks.
